This is the contents page of a hip hop magazine, it is like most contents pages of music magazines and has a large picture of 50 cent which takes up nearly half of the page. It has the contents magazine listed down the side of the page, some contents pages have it down the right side like this one does but some have it down the left hand side. The picture has no background to it, it is just 50 cent standing there looking back over his shoulder towards the person reading. This has the best effect because there is just a plain bright background as the page so the writing will stand out perfectly and the picture will stand up better than it would if it was on a normal background. It gives the magazine a proffessional look and this is how i would do my contents page.

This is the final mock up of my double page spread for my music magazine, there is a large backgroung image, the title of the story and the text at the bottom. I have only put a small box at the bottom for text so that if someone was to read it then they would not get bored easily because there would be too much to read.   The title of the double page spread will also be in dark colours to stand out well and catch attention. The background will also be light behing the picture to keep the house style and not to make the magazine dark because it is not a metal magazine it is more of a hip hop magazine. The text box at the bottom will be in small black writing to keep with the rest of the writing on the magazine.

This is the mock up of my front cover of what will be my music magazine, i have used this layout because it is the layout that used by most music magazines and this is how it looks best.The main image in the middle will be of the main star standing against a wall looking over their shoulder, it only covers the title slightly because this magazine is not known by anyone some of the most well known magazine can cover up alot of their title because everyone will know who they are but if i cover alot of the title withe the main image nobody will know the title. There will also be the date, price and a barcode to make the magazine look like a real music magazine. The barcode and the price will be at the bottom in small black writing and the date wull be at the top in small black writing. the background colours will be light because i want to be able to use dark writing on the magazine going down both sides so it will satnd out against the background. The title will also be quite dark to stand out against the light background and to keep a house style with the rest of the writing that is on the page.  

 

Vibe, the male gaze theory

These vibe front covers are using the male gaze theory to get more people to notice their magazine, the male gaze theory is that there is a women on the front showing something that men like then it is more likely to catch their attention than a man on the front cover because most men won't be that interested in looking at a picture of a man.

50 cent, vibe analysis

This is one of the front covers that I like the most, I like the way that vibe have used small things to create such a big effect. They have the image of 50 cent in what looks like a vey expensive and very smart suit, they also have him carrying a smart briefcase, this small change in clothing is perceived to readers as 50 cent being a very powerful and respectable man, this was how he wanted to come across because he says he wants to be a role model and that is the kind of characteristics that role models have. Also the background is done to make him look more powerful with explosions and fire, these small things have a huge effect on the reader and on the way that 50 cent is perceived as a person.

Vibe front cover examples

These images are front covers from Vibe music magazine, Vibe is generally a pop magazine but kind of overlaps with some artists. Vibe has Eminem and 50 cent witch XXL also has on their front covers. Vibe has a lot of big stars in it and is also a world wide magazine, it has stars like Kanye West, Rihanna and Drake and there are a lot of people in the world that would like to read about all of these people. The title of Vibe stretches right the way across the front cover at the top, the main images also cover some of the title because they are well known enough to do this but if you didn't know what vibe was you would still be able to see the title because the parts of the title that are covered is only small compared to the size of the text.

XXL magazine examples

This is one of the best examples of how XXL are very well know they have covered the title with the main image leaving just one X for readers to recognise that it is an XXL magazine but they still do. This is not the most recent example so it shows that XXL have been well known for a long time.

Music magazine front covers

All four of these images are of XXL magazine front covers, XXL is a worldwide hip hop magazine that features some of the best and most well know artists in the world. All of these front covers have really big stars on them, Dr Dre, eminem, 50 cent and tupac. XXL uses hip hop artists past and present because the third front cover is Tupac Shakur and he died in 1996, but Dr Dre, Eminem and 50 cent are all still alive. On nearly all of the XXL magazine front covers the title is in the top left hand corner and in the newer ones the artists head can be covering some of the title, this can now be done by XXL because they are a well known hip hop magazine and people will still know that it is an XXL magazine. Newer and less well known magazines will not be able to do this because people will not know the title.

Magazine analysis 2

This is another drawing/ mock up of a magazine front cover, this magazine also has a main picture in the middle like a music magazine to catch potential readers eyes but this is a gaming magazine, even though a lot of people play games not many people will want to spend their time reading about them in magazines. This mock up of a gaming magazine does not show a bar code but it should have one and when I make my music magazine it needs to have one be be amuse it is meant to be bought.

Magazine analysis 1

This is a mock up of a magazine that we did in class, it is to show how different types of magazines use different layouts to show the information that they want to. Most music magazines have a large image in the middle of a well known star that will catch people's eyes and make them want to buy it and an eye catching title to interest people and make them want to read about it. This magazine also has a large image in the middle but it is not an eye catching image it is more for technology enthusiast that will buy this magazine every week.

Contents page mock up

This is a mock up of the contents page of my music magazine/ newsletter for deyes high, i first planned to make it like this but i have changed it alot when making it because it didnt look that good. i have changed it to not having the pictures at the bottom but kept the title and the logo at the top. I have also kept the contents part but just moved it down to where the images are.

This is a  mock up of my music magazine/ newsletter that i have made for deyes high, when i have made it i changed it to being more simple and basic because the front cover looked to full. I took away three of the pictures that i planned to put on but kept one and kept two sets of the writting. I also changed the bottom by puuting in a bit of text abit like a sub heading but just underneath the main picture.

We have to research which type of music we would like to use when we are making our own music magazine, i generally like pop and hip hop but i will look at others like rock, indie and metal. There are alot of different music magazines for alot of different genres of music, and we have looked through alot of them.

I have chosen to do hip hop as my music magazine genre, I have chosen this genre because that is the type of music that I listen to when I do listen to music. I don't listen to music all the time and there are different parts of hip hop that I like and don't like.

Font ideas

This is a screenshot of the type of fonts that i was thinking about using for my school newsletter/ music magazine, the top one is grid which i did use as the main titles on both pages and the main writting at the bottom of the front cover. The second one is type writer and i decided not to use that.

My prelim photoshoot plus evaluation

These pictures are the first set of pictures that I have taken for the prelim task, this is to create a school newsletter on our own including pictures of students. The first set of pictures that I have taken are of  a group of students playing football, the hardest part about taking photos of people playing football is to get the ball in the picture in the air with the person kicking it looking normal which it did not happen on a few, it was also hard to get the light right we had to move a few times to get into shade to take the best pictures. The second set of photos that I have taken are of a student in sixth form who I chose because I thought he looked smart and represented the school well, he looked presentable and smart these are some main attributes that the school want to display. I have took the pictures of him outside the school sign to show the name of the school in the background, it was hard to get the right angle because the sun was shining onto the sign which reflected the light into the photo. The last set of photos that i have taken are of the same student in a science class with a bunsen burner, I have done this because deyes high school is a specialist science collage so I wanted to show something to do with science and I wanted to show modern and new that the science labs are to give the school a modern look aswell as its old style look of the main building in the front of the school in the background of the one with the deyes high school sign in.

Deyes high school ideology

                                                                   



Ideology is the secret agenda behind the text that has been written, it is something that is wanted to be conveyed within a text but wanted to be done discretely but still noticeable.

Deyes high school are gradually becoming more modern with new buildings and more technology, examples of the technology would  be the new ipads for english and media, the macs in media and the new computers in IT. The way that this could be conveyed could be through pictures of the old and new technology and buildings and compare them to each other.

Deyes high school care about their students, they want the best grades for their students and themselves. if they get the best grades dfor themselves they will get higher in the national league tables which will then get more pupils in in the future. To convey this in the newsletter i could put a graph on it of the grades that all of the students have achieved.

Deyes high school is a specialist science collage so they usually get the best science grades, to show this you could show pictures of pupils doing science experiments and a graph of science grades compared to other subjects.

Deyes high school is also a sporty school, they have alot of sports teams like football, rugby and netball. This could be shown through listing the teams in the newsletters and their next few games.

Deyes high school is also trying to be a healthy eating school, this could be shown through pupils without lucazades and unheathly foods.

Some staff at deyes high school do more than they have to to help the students get the best grades that they can, they will put on revision sessions after schools and help in lunchtime and breaks. for this you could show a timetable on the newsletter of all the revision sessions before the next set of exams.

Music Magazine introduction

         This blog is for my AS media studies coursework, i will be making a music magazine. The music magazine will have a contenets page, front cover and a double page spread. We will be making the music magazine using publisher and we will use some other softwares like photoshop to edit the pictures that we are using to how we want them. We also have to create a questionnaire for 25 people to answer about music magazines and genres of music magazines that they are, if they have bought them before and if they have not, the questionnaire will also ask what things they like and dislike about the music magazine so that i can try to make a good realistic magazine cover.
